Bad things happen.
My wife's recent accident reminds us all that there are things which we cannot control - like someone else talking on a cell phone while driving, and hitting our car. Wars, earthquakes, hard times, and there is a LOT of evil in the world; the list goes on and on.
But we have help available, if we'll only use it. Jesus tells us, "In this world, you will have troubles. But be of good cheer! for I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
Does this mean we'll sail through life on flowery beds of ease?
No. He said we'll have troubles. What he's telling us is that he's offering a way through those times. Not a way out, mind, but a way through. He promises that the Holy Spirit - his spirit - is "an ever-present help in time of need."
He offers his strength, his resources, as a way to get through without being bogged down in the day-to-day issues that continue to vex us all.
Call on him, and he will answer. As the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)
We don't have to live in fear. And that's good news, indeed.
