About That Ammo Shortage

On a whim, I walked through the ammo aisles at Sportsmen's Warehouse yesterday afternoon.

In terms of pistol ammo, they had:
  • .38 Spcl in abundance
  • .380 Auto
  • .357 Mag
  • .44 Spcl
  • .44 Mag
  • .45 Long Colt
And that's about it. I didn't check the rifle calibers, because I don't need any. The shot shell section seemed rather well-stocked, but for all I know it was all bird shot.

I did hear one clerk say that "Even our storeroom is bare." They had plenty of rifles, pistols & shotguns on the wall, though.

I suppose I could have checked a couple of other places, but they're probably just as depleted. Perhaps this situation will ease, like the panic buying in 2008/2009 ... but I'm not so sure. It almost seems that our current administration goes out of its way to incite a violent response, and it's testimony to the good sense & character of law-abiding firearm owners that no one has gone that way yet.

Ah well, work rears its ugly head. Later, y'all. Thanks for stopping by.

We have a new firearms store in town, owned and operated by some admirable young men. They haven't raised their margins, just pass through their wholesale increases. Have their eye on the long haul. That said, their stock levels are low.

WSF, I hope they make a success of it. Good luck to them!

That's about what I have seen as well. Good luck finding 9mm and 223 or 7.62 of any kind.

I hear that, Duke. A friend bought a Ruger LC9 a couple months ago, and is nearly panic-struck because his limited budget only allowed him to get 150 rds.

Like Duke said, same here.

Rev. Paul said...

Thanks, Stephen. It does seem to be nearly everywhere, although I heard from an acquaintance in Tennessee that his local stores have plenty.

Probably shooting this weekend, just have to actually target shoot and not pop off a few 'clips' of 'bullets' for fun.

Rev. Paul said...

Understood, Max. There's a range just 3 miles down the hill from me here, and there's been a LOT less shooting in the last few weeks.

Interesting - as barren as the shelves have been here in NC, the local range is PACKED every time I've been in recently.

The amount of firearms going out the door at the sales counter across the lobby from the range is equally impressive.

BadgerMedic, perhaps I should have been more clear. The number of shooters is huge. The number of rounds per shooter has diminished greatly.

Looking at my ammo stash the other day, I was struck by the sudden increase in my net worth (well, on paper, anyway - or perhaps I should say in lead, brass and gunpowder!) With .223 going for a dollar a round, and serious defensive ammo for more than that, it seems my ammo stash is now the single most valuable collection of possessions I own - way into five figures worth!

Hmm... I wonder if I can insure it against wastage?

Peter, I'm going to guess it's all in how you phrase it to the insurer. :)
