I Wasn't Going to Write About This

but here goes. At the conclusion of work yesterday, I got in my truck to drive home.

That's the last thing I remember until I woke up, hanging from my seatbelt in the now-upside down truck, in a ditch along the railroad tracks south of town. The truck was destroyed, but I was uninjured except for some small nicks or cuts on my hands from crawling out through the piles of broken glass.

The fire department transported me to the nearest hospital, where I was duly examined and x-rayed, and pronounced healthy.

Until the cardiologist walked in with my EKG and said we needed to talk.

Long story, short version: I had angioplasty this morning to open a blocked coronary artery. It was 100 per cent successful, and there was ZERO damage to the heart muscle.

Got it just in time. Praise God!

So I'm riding out the rest of the workweek as a guest in the Cardiac Unit, under observation. Can go home on Friday, they say.

This isn't how I'd planned to spend my week, but my wife and daughters brought me the laptop & my Kindle. At least now, after some 27 hours here, I have something to do.

I can't promise that I'll post regularly, but I will be checking in... and I trust your days are better than my yesterday was.

I thought your silence was a bit odd, can't explain why I felt that way.

At any rate, I'm very glad they fixed your heart before things got bad.

Get some rest. Let everything else take care of itself.

Good to hear that it was not your time to leave us! Take care, rest . . . . we have it until you're back at it!! I'll say a prayer of thanks for your quick recovery!!

Love to you and the ladies.

Praying for a full recovery. The medications and physical rehab won't be fun, but it beats the alternative.

Glad you're OK, buddy. My heart attack back in 2009 hit me the same way - out of the blue, no warning.

Glad they fixed you up! I'll be keeping you and yours in my prayers.

Get better, and take your meds, brother. I had the same procedure done when I had my heart attack. You're in my prayers.

Oh, man. Glad you're ok and still with us. YOu take it easy, and if there's anything you need, just say the word.

My first thought about this was that God writes straight with crooked paths. That an accident that left you mainly unscathed led to finding out about your heart in time. God is so GOOD! A speedy recovery is my prayer and many thanks to God for this miracle in your life. :)

Had my own heart crud lately. No fun. Get to feeling better. I agree with Becca. Sometime things happen to give us just what we need.

I believe the good Lord was giving you a wake up call.

I'm so sorry. Praise the Lord you're fine. I truly understand how you feel, been there, done that as they say. Please, get well soon.

Oh my what an ordeal. So sorry you are having to go through this. Praying for a speedy recovery!!

Rev. Paul said...

Everyone, if you don't mind ... I'll just issue a blanket "thank you so very much" from the heart (bad pun alert) and intend to follow all the good advice.

Honestly, I feel fine, and wouldn't have known there was a problem if the EKG hadn't picked up on it.

Again, thank you so much.

When they say "Jesus take the wheel" it's supposed to be a philosophical thing. Fortunately it seems that in your case it's literal as well. Health to you.

Prayers and good thoughts your way, of course.

Trading a truck for no heart damage - while I regret the loss of the truck, that was a good trade. Did you find out what caused the blackout?

Glad to hear you are safe, getting well, with a loving family and something to distract you!

I'll have Calmer Half keep you in his prayers, since I think he's got more pull with the man upstairs. Take care, you.

Thank you, friends. I appreciate it very much.

Oh Rev. Paul! Prayers and all our good wishes for a speedy recovery. My husband had by-pass in '99 and he's doing great. Hang in there. Your in my thoughts and prayers.

Rev. Paul said...

Thank you, Cathy. I'll take all the prayers and good wishes I can get. :^)

The Lord works in mysterious ways. Glad you weren't hurt in the accident and even more glad they caught the other problem before it was a real problem.

Rev. Paul said...

Jennifer, I couldn't agree more. Without this unscheduled trip to the E.R., I'd never have known about the blockage until a heart attack happened.

BobG said...

Glad to hear you got through it ok. I had an attack back in May of 2005 and had to get a stent put in. In my case I was woken at 4:30 in the morning with the sensation that something large was trying to kick its way out of my chest.
While I was in there they told me I'd had a couple of earlier heart attacks I didn't know about.

I am SO glad you were unharmed. You were well watched over in that event.

Stay warm, rest, don't worry about your blog. You will be in our prayers this weekend.

Call if there is anything else I can do.

Rev. Paul said...

BobG, I'm very grateful to NOT go through that experience. Glad you survived it, sir.

WSF, thank you.

DR, thank you, too. I'll take those prayers!

Brigid, thanks. I'll be home tomorrow afternoon, they assure me, but will follow your advice. It's having "met" so many fine folks through this blog that prompted me to post about it. I appreciate you very much, my friend.

Whew!! that was a close call. Prayers sent your way that you will fully recover and be out harassing (well at least giving a good tongue lashing) to those who need it. Whoever that may be. (Smile, God loves you)

Having been upside down in a vehicle myself (and in a few other less than desirable positions) I bet you are now fonder of seat belts than ever. I know I am. Very glad you were just "left hanging" and nothing worse! I guess God knew you needed a checkup. He has a funny way of talking sometimes but He's very difficult not to hear, hehe. Glad you are OK brother. "Hang" in there LOL!

Rev. Paul said...

PolyKahr, thank you. As the saying goes, I crave prayers.

Groundhog, I've been rigidly pro-seatbelt all my life, including not even putting the vehicle in gear until everyone else is belted, too. But like the Bible says, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. Thanks!

Oh Lord - prayers for you, and I can tell you - it is wonderful news that your heart didn't suffer any damage and they got the clot out. I recently had a friend (a firefighter) who I had to take in for a heart attack on the job. He's back at work about three weeks later.

Very glad to hear you are ok, and keep on the recovery road!

Rev. Paul said...

BadgerMedic, thank you. We are INTENSELY grateful for way things turned out.

Auntie J said...

I are late to the party here, but I'm glad that you got all fixed up and there was no damage. That's wonderful news!

Rev. Paul said...

Thank you, Auntie J. It's an amazing thing, since we had no idea whatsoever prior to this.
