Leaders in the 2013 Iron Dog snowmachine race were taking their final mandatory layovers on the trail Friday morning, with a close race expected en route to Tanana.
Iron Dog volunteer Chris Graeber says as of 11:30 a.m. Friday, only seven minutes of trail time separated race leaders Marc McKenna and Dusty VanMeter in Team 17 from Team 23’s Brian Dick and Eric Quam in second place.

Temperatures were hovering around 20 degrees below zero Friday, and drivers can expect further wind chill off the Yukon River at race speeds. The first racers are expected to reach Tanana at about 2:30 p.m., if all goes well.
