A fire that sparked along the banks of Funny River, just south of Soldotna, was likely caused by a campfire not properly extinguished, according to firefighters with the state Division of Forestry.
Spokesperson Sarah Saarloos said the fire grew to encompass 20,000 acres by 9 p.m. Tuesday. Earlier in the evening, flames were spreading in both directions along the shore of Tustumena Lake.
