Army Guardsman Mauled in Bear Attack

ANCHORAGE - An Alaska Army National Guardsman is in stable condition after being mauled by a brown bear sow during a Sunday morning exercise on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

In a statement on JBER's Facebook page, base officials say the incident was a product of "an encounter with a brown bear sow defending her nearby cubs during a land navigation exercise in a training area" on base.

The Guardsman is being treated at the base hospital.

... In May, Jessica Gamboa was running with her soldier husband when she was mauled by a brown bear on base, in an incident JBER officials described as a "'wrong time, wrong place' situation." Gamboa later said she thought she would die in the attack on the Fort Richardson side of the base, before the sow that attacked her ran away and Gamboa was able to reach medical attention.

Maybe someone from the Obama Administration can have a "robust conversation" with those bears.

Shouldn't be flippant; wouldn't wish a bear mauling on anyone.

Progressives are the kind of "the world is exactly how I wish it to be" folks that Alaskans wind up rescuing.

All bears are Winnie the Pooh or Disney characters, and they're just misunderstood, you know.

No mention about how you cannot be armed on an Army post either. I bet even a small pistol would have saved the woman some pain and the soldier was prolly only carrying blanks at best.

You nailed it, Preppy. Exactly so.

Rev. Paul,

Our military should be armed at all times. I have to agree with PP.

I'm so asceered of bears that I can't even read the above account.

Agreed, Sandy.

Cathy, I'm not scared of them - but I have a VERY healthy respect for their individual space. :)
